The first line of London's Underground Railway Network and the oldest in the world was completed in 1863, linking Paddington and Farringdon. London Underground is also known as the ‘tube’ which covers 620 square miles of
the city with over two hundred and fifty miles of track. It is the world's largest urban railway network.
The Underground allows the smooth circulation of business, leisure, and tourism. It carried 19 million people an astonishing total of 7,387 million kilometres in 2007. London would not be the capital of Britain without the underground.
