Tower of London

E-mail Print PDF
The Tower of London used to be a fortress, royal palace and a prison. It has also served as a place of execution and torture, an armoury, a treasury, a zoo, the Royal Mint, a public records office, an observatory, and since 1303, the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. More than 2 million visitors come to see the tower of London and it’s big enough for you to explore it for two days.

For much of its 900 year history the Tower was an object of fear. Those who had offended the monarch were held within its dank walls. A lucky few lived in the comparative comfort, but the majority had to put up with appalling conditions. Many did not get out alive, and were tortured before meeting cruelly violent deaths on nearby Tower Hill. The White Tower was the tallest building in London, standing at 90 feet (30 m) high, when it was finished in 1097.
