The London Eye is located at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. It is also known as the Millennium Wheel and is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe (135 metres).
When it was erected it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world but the Star of Nanchang (160m) beat to it in May 2006, and then the Singapore Flyer (165m) on February 11, 2008. It is visited by over 3 million people a year. The site is adjacent to that of the former Dome of Discovery, which was built for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The London Eye gives a bird’s eye view of London and it has been one of the world's most popular attractions since it's completion in Spring 2005. You can see over 25 miles of the city, up from a glass case.
The London eye has 32 capsules and each capsule weighs 10 tonns and can hold 25 people. It is now a "must see attraction" in London. The London Eye ranks as one of the world's to 50 tourist attractions in terms of visitor numbers, just behind the Statute of Liberty and the Coliseum but ahead of the Taj Mahal and Versailles.
